New initiative to end internal Palestinian division

Independent Palestinian MP Jamal Al-Khodari yesterday proposed an initiative aiming to end the internal Palestinian division which began in 2007, Quds Press reported.

Al-Khodari, the head of the Popular Committee Against the Siege on Gaza, said: “We are proposing this initiative based on specific mechanisms which were reached after deep readings of the latest positions of the main two sides of the division: Fatah and Hamas.”

During a press conference, he called for Gaza’s Administrative Committee, formed by Hamas, to be dissolved on condition that President Mahmoud Abbas reverse all decision he has taken which have led to a deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip.

This, he explained, would allow the national reconciliation government to work with full power in Gaza and support existing and new employees, as well as guarantee their rights.

The Palestinian Authority would then need to reactivate Parliament in order to approve the national unity government. In addition, preparation for presidential, parliamentarian and Palestinian Legislative Council elections should be started.

“If the sides of the internal division accept this initiative, the division will end within a couple of days,” Al-Khodari said.

The official had proposed a similar initiative two years ago however he was not successful in its implementation
